Industrial design is usually defined as the combined use of streams of art and science to improve the function and appearance of a product and make it more appealing for customers. It has application both for products which are in the development stage and those that are already in the market.
Industrial design primarily focuses on how the customer will relate to a particular product. It means the customers must see the products as desirable items and worth spending their money on. Such a result can be achieved by making important additions to the features or the looks of the product, which helps the product to influence the customers to purchase it.
This requires an elaborate research into the purchasing habits of the consumer, which can then be considered by the designers of the product. After that come activities like drawing, model making, sampling, and testing, before the item is considered fit for large scale production. Nowadays, the designers are increasingly using techniques like 3D software and CAD applications for dealing with these tasks.
Industrial designing primarily emphasizes on the overall texture and shape of a product. Designers have to figure out the usefulness, sturdiness, and user friendly features of the product in addition to its appearance and aspects like colour or even the sounds. In fact, a designer can even reduce the manufacturing costs significantly by coming up with alterations in the design.
Industrial design is not limited to the above aspects but also extends to other factors like product packaging, study of the market demand for the item, and even the study of the customers’ reaction to the product’s design. This is the reason why industrial designers have to undergo years of rigorous training to make themselves suitable for the profession and start handling live projects.
Some of the renowned industrial designers are Raymond Loewy, designer of the Coca-Cola bottle, Jonathan Ive, credited with designing the iMac and Brooks Stevens, the extremely popular designer of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
